Slamming doors, disembodied voices, and the sounds of children’s footsteps are just some of the strange things that have occurred at the haunted Kreischer Mansion located in Staten Island, New York.

A wealthy brick manufacturer named Balthasar Kreischer built the Victorian home in 1885. In fact, he built twin mansions for his sons Edward and Charles on top of the hill that overlooked a neighborhood called Kreischerville (it’s now called Charleston). In the 1930s, one of the mansions was destroyed and the remaining home was landmarked in 1968.

Rick Rispoli, who is a long-time concert promoter, was at the mansion last summer promoting upcoming concerts when he encountered strange events. One day, he and his assistant were walking into the house when they heard a woman crying. Elizabeth Marino, who works with Rispoli, explained, “We came in one day and heard doors slamming and a woman crying on the second floor. Then we heard what sounded like a child’s footsteps.” And on the exact same day, the front door slammed shut behind Rispoli.

The crying woman is believed to be the spirit of Frieda Kreischer who was the wife of Edward. Frieda and Edward both have reportedly been seen around the location, as well as an unknown woman wearing Victorian-era clothing who is often spotted sitting on the mansion’s porch.

Another person who works with Rispoli, named Carla Gaor, claimed to have seen the ghost of a young boy while she was getting the location ready for a hayride and haunted house event for Halloween. In fact, many people over the years have reported seeing a young boy running around the property who they believe is one of Balthasar Kreischer’s many children – three of his children died young so the spirit could be one of them.

Strange balls of light have also been spotted. “We captured five orbs of light that moved to different spots in the same formation on a cell phone,” Rispoli stated before adding that the orbs kept getting bigger and moved towards the entrance of the home.

Claims of paranormal activity began after the mansion was turned into a restaurant in the 1990s. Visitors to the restaurant claimed to have heard loud bangs, doors slamming, and pictures flying off the walls. Eventually the restaurant closed down and it was purchased in the year 2000 by a developer named Isaac Yomtovian who restored the mansion.

In 2005, a man was brutally murdered inside of the mansion and his body was chopped up and burnt in the house’s furnace. If that’s not a recipe for a restless spirit haunting a location, I don’t know what is.

The house has even been featured on television. Portions of the pilot episode of “Boardwalk Empire” were shot on the property, as well as some scenes from “Gotham”. As for paranormal shows, the mansion was featured on “Ghost Hunters” as well as “Paranormal Lockdown”.
