According to a new INSIDER poll, people who said they’d vote for a Republican candidate are more likely to believe in the Illuminati and creatures like the Loch Ness Monster and Bigfoot. On the other side of the aisle, Democratic voters are more likely to believe that aliens have visited us here on Earth.
The poll, which had more than a thousand responders, asked, “If any, which of the following unproven ideas, paranormal phenomena or general beliefs do you believe to be credible?” There were 15 options to choose from, including, “Ghosts, spirits, and other paranormal specters exist”, “Extraterrestrial visitors have come to Earth”, “Illuminati, or a group of powerful people exerting control over world events”, “Bigfoot, Yeti, or Nessie”, “Astrology”, “Flat Earth”, and “None of these”, just to name a few of them (the entire survey can be read here).
There was common belief from both Republican and Democratic voters that meditation has health benefits, as it’s said to reduce stress and improve overall focus and concentration. They also both believed in essential oils, spirits and ghosts, and aromatherapy – around 30% of voters believed in those topics.
But that’s pretty much where their similarities ended, as they were quite a few interesting differences in what people believe in. Almost 1 in 5 people who responded to the poll and who plan to vote for the Republican candidate in their state believe in creatures such as Bigfoot – over five points higher than Democratic voters who took the survey. The same results happened for those who believe in the Illuminati.
As for Democratic voters, 21% of those who took the poll believe that extraterrestrials have already visited Earth – only 17% of Republican voters chose that survey option.
Chemtrails were an interesting option, as over 22% of liberal voters believe that the condensation left behind in the sky by planes contain chemicals that control humans, while only 17% of conservative voters believe in it. Another interesting answer was the theory that the Earth is flat. Apparently not many people believe in that theory, as less than 3% of both Republican and Democratic voters chose that poll answer. In addition to the flat earth theory, healing crystals and psychic readings came in at the bottom of the poll.
“People tend to adopt conspiracy theories that match with their existing worldview,” Joseph Uscinski, who is a political scientist at the University of Miami, stated to INSIDER.
With so much coverage on creatures like Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster, as well as the countless reports of UFO sightings, it’s not surprising that so many Americans believe in these topics. And even if they’re unsure as to whether they believe or not, many are still very interested in the possibility of unexplained, mysterious, and unproven theories. So, while Democratic and Republican voters tend to differ on what they believe in, I think it’s safe to say that mostly everyone believes in some sort of conspiracy theory.
