Antoinette Hall opened its doors on Christmas of 1868 in Pulaski, Tennessee and was used for local productions, traveling entertainment, graduations, lectures, and more throughout the years.
When the STAAR Theatre group was looking for a new home for their performances, they stumbled upon a pretty interesting discovery at Antoinette Hall when they found a secret stage that had been hidden for many years. There was a devastating fire in 1867 that burned down a lot of Pulaski Square (this is where the hall is located).
Tammy Pierchoski from STAAR Theatre explained what happened, “It’s after the war, reconstruction era, so he [Angenold Cox] decided to build this community center to bring people together.” “He did that in the form of an opera hall, and he named it Antoinette Hall after his wife.” It served as an entertainment venue for several years before turning into a clothing store and later as a location for music videos, tours, photo shoots, and even paranormal investigations.
Pierchoski wants to return the hall to its former glory but she may run into some obstacles as the place is said to be haunted by at least three spirits. The first one is a mean-spirited ghost nicknamed “Mr. Nasty” because he won’t reveal his name or anything else about himself. He is said to be extremely possessive of the area in which he occupies and doesn’t like it when people walk through his space. He is especially nasty with men and can sometimes even make people sick when they attempt to provoke him or sneak up on them from behind.
The second ghost is named Josie who lived in the late 1800s or early 1900s. She had communicated that she either worked at the hall or often visited it. She allegedly had an affair with a married man. She has been described as a gentle spirit who enjoys telling her story although sometimes Mr. Nasty won’t let her speak. According to old records, there was a Josie Phelps who lived in Pulaski during that time so perhaps it’s her.
The third entity is named Lilly who is believed to be a young girl from more recent times. She had communicated with investigators that she passed away in a car accident and now enjoys playing at the hall in the afterlife. She is known to play with toys and has even lit up equipment set out by paranormal investigators. Research showed that there was a child named Lilly who performed at the theater and who did in fact die in a car accident.
If having at least three ghosts lurking around isn’t creepy enough, there is an alleged portal in the basement of the hall that allows numerous ghosts to come and go from the location. When investigators have explored the basement, their equipment would light up or their batteries would suddenly die. An Indian Chief and an Elemental (an entity that was never human) have been encountered in that area along with numerous other ghosts.
Let’s hope that the ghosts don’t get too upset as Pierchoski attempts to return the theater to its former glory days.
