Lighthouses definitely have a reputation for being haunted, and since “National Lighthouse Day” is August 7th, let’s take a look at five of the most haunted ones in the world.
St. Augustine Lighthouse
The St. Augustine Lighthouse in St. Augustine, Florida, has a history of tragic events, especially during its construction. In 1873, three children drowned after getting trapped during the construction of the lighthouse. Additionally, a man who was painting the tower fell to his death.
People have witnessed shadow figures in the tower, as well as furniture moving on their own. The ghosts are even said to be physical, as one man had his arm hairs plucked and his ankle grabbed. Other unexplained occurrences include the smell of cigar smoke and hearing unexplained footsteps climbing the tower steps. As for the ghosts, there have been reports of a girl in the keeper’s dwelling who plays pranks, as well as a spirit in the gift shop who disturbs the merchandise, and a tall man in the basement.

Point Lookout Lighthouse
Located at the southern tip of St. Mary’s County, Maryland is the Point Lookout Lighthouse and it’s said to be America’s most haunted lighthouse. It was built in 1830 and was later used as a Confederacy prisoner of war camp after the Battle of Gettysburg, with approximately 4,000 men dying there. An area inside of the lighthouse was said to have been used as an interrogation room where the Union Army often tortured those being questioned.
Many people have seen a female apparition wearing a white blouse and long blue skirt standing at the top of the stairs and they believe she is one of the first lighthouse keepers. More apparitions have been seen in the basement. People have heard disembodied voices, while others have heard footsteps, unexplained snoring, and even seen doors mysteriously opening and closing on their own. In a room upstairs, some have smelled something decomposing but nothing they did could get rid of the awful scent.

Tevennec Lighthouse
Off the coast of Brittany, France, the Tevennec Lighthouse has a dark and sinister past with several unexplained deaths. The first lighthouse keeper was stationed there alone and was said to have gone completely mad. He apparently heard voices telling him to leave, and ever since then, two people had to be stationed at the lighthouse so that they wouldn’t go insane. Unfortunately that didn’t help, as several more people died while staying at that lighthouse.
Crucifixes were placed in the lighthouse and even a priest was called in to perform an exorcism on the island, but it was eventually deserted and became a fully-automated lighthouse. Now nobody has to stay in the cursed lighthouse on the island of death.
Tevennec Lighthouse
Souter Lighthouse
Built in 1871, the Souter Lighthouse is located in Marsden, England. The majority of the activity is centered around the kitchen and living areas, as people have witnessed a female apparition, as well as spoons levitating. They have felt sudden cold spots, smelled tobacco, and even got physically grabbed. A man wearing an old-fashioned lighthouse keeper’s uniform has also been spotted. The cries from a young girl have been reported, as well as people hearing their names being called. Other paranormal activity includes seeing orbs of light and ecto mist in addition to experiencing unexplained electrical problems.

Old Presque Isle Lighthouse
Overlooking the Great Lakes (Lake Huron), the Old Presque Isle Lighthouse in Presque Isle, Michigan was only in operation for 31 years (1840 to 1871), but that’s more than enough time to have generated tons of ghost stories. Many people over the years have heard a woman screaming and it is believed that it’s the spirit of the lighthouse keeper’s wife who was once locked away inside of the tower.
The most well-known ghost is George Parris who moved into the keeper’s cottage with his wife in the 1990s so that they could run the museum and give guided tours to the public. However, since George has passed away, people have seen the light inside of the lighthouse turn on at dusk and then shut off at dawn. What’s even creepier is that the light has been disabled permanently so it shouldn’t come on. Even the pilots for the Air National Guard have seen the light. The Coast Guard actually removed the light from the tower, but for some unknown (or ghostly) reason, it keeps shining at night.
