Flagship hot hatch will launch next year with more than 220kW and a production run of 3000 units.

Mini has previewed the upcoming John Cooper Works GP once again, with a new set of images of a camouflaged prototype tackling the Nurburgring.

The company says its new performance halo will hit the market in 2020, with production to be limited to 3000 units globally, one thousand more than the two previous iterations.

According to Mini, the previous-generation JCW GP lapped the ‘Green Hell’ in 8 minutes 23 seconds, and the new car has already dipped under the eight-minute mark in prototype testing.

We already know the new Mini JCW GP will be powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, confirmed to develop “more than” 220kW. While the German-owned British marque is yet to confirm the specifics of the powertrain, the 225kW/450Nm 2.0-litre turbo from the BMW X2 M35i and upcoming M135i will feature.

The use of this powertrain should also mean the JCW GP will get all-wheel drive for the first time, too, which would only further enhance its corner-carving ability and acceleration thanks to the extra grip.
