MONTERREY, Mexico — Trevor Cahill had the same problems in Mexico that has he had in the United States.
Cahill, throughout his career a ground ball pitcher who didn’t give up many homers, allowed three more in the Angels’ 14-2 loss to the Houston Astros before a crowd of 18,177 at Estadio de Béisbol Monterrey.
When Cahill took the mound, he made a little bit of history. He became the first pitcher to start major league regular season games in four countries. Besides, the United States and Canada, he had already started a game in Australia for the Arizona Diamondbacks against the Dodgers to open the 2014 season.
Coincidentally, Wade Miley started the other game for the Diamondbacks in Australia, and he shared the mound with Cahill on Saturday.
Miley fared much better though.
Cahill gave up a homer to Alex Bregman in the first, a two-run shot to Michael Brantley in the third and a solo homer to Yuli Gurriel in the fourth.
Cahill also gave up a pair of runs in the second, as he failed to post a single zero on the scoreboard. He ended up getting knocked out with one out in the fourth, allowing six runs in his worst outing in a disappointing start to the season.
The biggest issue has been the homers. Cahill has now allowed 12 home runs in 34-2/3 innings this season, a rate of 3.1 per nine innings. His career average coming into the season was 1.0 homer per nine innings.
In his last four starts, he’s allowed nine homers in 15-2/3 innings. That’s one more homer than he gave up in 110 innings last season, a year in which he was good enough to earn a $9 million deal from the Angels this winter.
The Angels had given him a few extra days off after his last start, but it didn’t help.
By the time Cahill was finished on Saturday, the Angels were down 6-0, and they could not do much to cut into that lead against Miley.
One of the two runs they scored in his six innings came on a homer by Albert Pujols, who racked up the 1,999th RBI of his career. It also marked the 38th different ballpark in which Pujols has homered.
Mike Trout went hitless in four at-bats, ending his franchise-record 29-game on-base streak to start a season.
More to come on this story.
